PESHAWAR – Police has arrested a district councillor of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday in connection with the murder of Sardar Soran Singh, a leading politician, lawmaker and special assistant on minorities’ affairs who was shot dead in Buner district of the province.
Baldev Kumar, the suspect, was arrested from Barikot area of Swat district and shifted to an undisclosed location for further interrogation, according to police and eyewitnesses. Two other suspects were also arrested from Buner.
According to earlier media reports, Tehreek-i-Taliban had claimed responsibility for the assassination of Soran Singh, who belonged to the Sikh community and joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in 2011 after being associated with the Jamaat-i-Islami.
The victim leader held one of several seats reserved for the religious minorities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Around 20,000 Sikhs are living in Pakistan, most in the country’s northwest province.
